What is Treatment Decision Support?

Helping men and transwomen take control of their prostate cancer treatment decision.

Every year, over 52,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Many face life-changing decisions about their treatment choice quickly, often without enough information or support.

Nobody should face prostate cancer alone or uninformed

Make Sense of It, is a pilot project that puts people who have just been diagnosed with prostate cancer, back in the driver’s seat and helps them feel confident and informed when choosing what prostate cancer treatment to have. Each participant is matched with a trained Treatment Decision Buddy with lived experience. The Buddy will listen, and share information non-directively, to help individuals make an informed decision about what treatment to have; and ultimately give the individual the confidence to decide which treatment is best for them.

Support is free, confidential, and tailored to each individual

Make Sense of It, is currently being offered to:

  • People who are based in the Yorkshire and the West Midlands, and are affected by prostate cancer
  • People who identify as LGBTQIA+, based in the UK and are affected by prostate cancer

Our Treatment Decision Buddies will:

  • Be matched to the participant who is most compatible with them e.g. they live within the same area, or are of a similar age / gender.
  • Listen without judgment.
  • Help men, trans-women and their partners explore priorities and make informed decisions.
  • Provide emotional support and help make sense of it all
