Spotlight On: PROSPECT Bristol

This month, we’re shining a light on the PROSPECT group (Bristol and District Prostate Cancer Support Network). Our Director of Programme and Operations, Sarah Gray, went to go and see them. Here’s what she has to say…

‘Last month I was invited down to Bristol to speak about the work of Tackle for the PROSPECT Summer Conference. It was a great day with speakers, a mindfulness walk, some great networking and a lovely lunch, all in the beautiful surrounding of Penny Brohn UKs national headquarters.

The PROSPECT group (Bristol and District Prostate Cancer Support Network) stands out as a beacon of prostate cancer support and education. With regular meetings at BAWA Filton, the Penny Brohn Centre, and the Macmillan Centre at Southmead Hospital, PROSPECT provides a vital platform for men to share their experiences and learn from one another. Their supportive network extends beyond just those diagnosed, inviting friends and family to all gatherings.

Meetings are held three times a month: coffee mornings on the first Thursday (10am-noon) at the Penny Brohn Centre, afternoon sessions on the third Tuesday (2-4pm) at the Macmillan Centre, and informal evening meetings at BAWA Filton. These sessions are more than just meetings; they are opportunities for individuals to connect, share stories, and receive emotional and informational support.

Like many of our prostate cancer support groups, another feature of PROSPECT is its commitment to raising awareness. They actively conduct prostate cancer awareness talks, even reaching out to groups with learning disabilities, ensuring that information about prostate cancer is accessible to all. This dedication to education is crucial in encouraging men over 50 (and 45 in high-risk groups) to get annual PSA checks, potentially saving lives through early detection.

What was very evident from my visit to their Summer Conference was PROSPECT’s holistic approach. By fostering a welcoming environment where personal experiences are shared and professional medical insights are provided, PROSPECT ensures comprehensive support for its members. Their proactive awareness campaigns serve as a model for how to effectively engage and educate the broader community about prostate cancer.
